The UAE has no single "residence permit". Residency is issued as a visa of a particular type, and the term, conditions and ability to sponsor family depend on it.
Main routes
Through a company
A founder or partner of a licensed company receives a residence visa under the office or zone quota. The visa is usually issued for two years with renewal. More in the article Residence Visa Through a Company.
Through property
Buying property above a set threshold gives the right to an investor visa. For a basic visa the threshold usually cited is from AED 750,000 and a two-year term; for a Golden Visa, from AED 2 million. Sources differ on the details, and conditions change, so check them with ICP, GDRFA or the Dubai Land Department.
Through employment
The employer arranges a work visa for the employee. Residency is tied to the contract.
Remote work
For those who work for a foreign employer or run their own online business, a special one-year visa is available. According to official information, employees must have an income of at least USD 3,500 per month; for business owners the threshold is higher.
Golden Visa
A long-term visa for 5 or 10 years (the term depends on the category) for investors, entrepreneurs and specialists. Details are in the article UAE Golden Visa.
How to choose
- Define why you need residency: business, family, taxes or property
- Choose the option that matches your income and budget
- Check the requirements for time spent in the country
- Clarify whether family can be included
Residency and taxes
A residence visa and tax residency are different things. Tax matters depend on the structure of the business and your country of residence. They are best discussed with a tax adviser.
